Whether we are delivering world-class care, educating the next generation of healthcare professionals, or pushing the boundaries of cardiovascular research, our goal is always to improve outcomes for our patients and the broader community. Some of our notable achievements include:
- Healthgrades, an organization that measures in-hospital and post-discharge survival and complications, has named Stony Brook University Hospital as one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care™ for nine consecutive years and one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Surgery™ for past two years. Stony Brook University Hospital is one of only two hospitals in New York State to be named among America's 100 Best Hospitals for Cardiac Care for nine years in a row.
- The Cardiothoracic Surgery Division has earned the highest three-star rating from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for overall patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG or heart bypass surgery) procedures.
- According to CMS.org/Hospital Compare, Stony Brook has delivered Long Island’s best cumulative survival outcomes for patients with myocardial infarction and heart failure over the past six years, and is the only program in NYS to be statistically better than the national average for both myocardial infarction and heart failure.
- Stony Brook is the only hospital on Long Island to have achieved the American College of Cardiology’s Chest Pain Center with Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) & Resuscitation designation. Our Complex Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Program uses cutting-edge technologies to offer treatments for patients with severely reduced heart function who are often considered too high risk to undergo surgery. Treatment strategies include the use of rotational atherectomy to treat calcified coronary vessels and advanced techniques to treat totally obstructed vessels. We are a recognized leader in using mini-heart pumps, such as the Impella®, to provide stability for patients undergoing high-risk procedures.
- Our Heart Rhythm Center introduced an advanced Hybrid Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) Program that combines surgical- and catheter-based techniques to restore a normal heart rhythm. We use “zero-radiation imaging” for ablation treatments and are the only program on Long Island to provide data to the National Atrial Fibrillation registry for quality improvement.
- Our Valvular Heart Disease Program is a national leader in clinical trials and has brought advanced technologies to our patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). We are experts in the use of MitraClip™ for mitral valve repair, which allows patients who were previously considered too high-risk to be treated, sometimes forestalling the need for heart transplantation. We also offer minimally invasive treatment options for fixing previously placed valves so that patients can be spared a second surgery.
- Stony Brook is one of only three programs in all of New York State to be certified for both Heart Failure and Mechanical Circulatory Support by The Joint Commission. We have been continuously recertified in Heart Failure and Cardiomyopathy (2013-23) and Ventricular Assist Devices (2011-23). Stony Brook also received the American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Quality Achievement Award for the fourth consecutive year.
- Stony Brook's non-invasive/echocardiography laboratory features internationally renowned cardiologists who provide second-opinion assessments of valvular and complex cardiology cases with industry-leading advanced technologies.
- Our Cardio-Oncology Program was recently awarded as only one of three programs in the United States as a Gold Level Center of Excellence by the International Cardio-Oncology Society.
- Stony Brook's state-of-the-art
- Cardiogenic Shock Program rapidly brings together a multidisciplinary team to provide advanced cardiac treatment for the most critically ill cardiac patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
- Along with Stony Brook Southampton Hospital and Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital, we provide Long Islanders with local access to highly acclaimed cardiologists and cardiology specialists , cardiovascular and vascular surgeons.
- Our Cardiology Fellowship Program attracts residents from the finest training programs in the United States based on the outstanding level of training, teaching and research offered at the Stony Brook Heart Institute. After graduation, these fellows have become cardiovascular disease leaders within our communities in addition to being selected for “super-fellowships” at the most high-sought after programs in the world.
- Stony Brook’s researchers have published hundreds of scientific articles in the cardiovascular literature over the past five years. Being at the cutting edge of research allows us to provide our patients with an array of diagnostic and treatment options not readily available at most hospitals and expertise that is reflective of being members of national committees that establish guidelines for cardiovascular care.
At Stony Brook Heart Institute, we maintain a steadfast commitment to excellence and are determined to stay at the forefront of innovation and discovery, so that we can continue to provide the best possible cardiac care, education and research in cardiovascular medicine.
