The Cardiothoracic Surgery Division at Stony Brook Heart Institute has earned a distinguished three-star rating (the highest level) from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for overall patient care and outcomes in isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG or heart bypass surgery) procedures from 2019-2021 (the latest rating).

American College of Cardiology: Chest Pain Center
Stony Brook is the only hospital on Long Island to have achieved the Chest Pain Center with Primary Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) & Resuscitation designation from the American College of Cardiology (ACC) and the only facility on Long Island to have received the past two back-to-back accreditations.

The American Heart Association’s Gold Plus Get With The Guidelines®-Heart Failure Quality Achievement Award — received for the fifth consecutive year — recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that patients with heart failure receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines founded in the latest scientific evidence.
CMS Measures: Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI) and Heart Failure (HF)
30-day risk-standardized mortality measures for acute myocardial infarction (National rate: 12.3%; Stony Brook: 9.3%) and heart failure are better than the national average. (National rate: 11.2%; Stony Brook: 7.8%)
High-Volume Procedures
In 2021, Stony Brook Heart University Hospital treated 4,300+ cardiac inpatients. Cardiac electrophysiology and Cardiac Catheterizations procedures were performed on 5,000+ patients. The Heart Institute’s Cardiothoracic Surgery team treats, on average, 500 patients per year, with 150 of those being isolated CABG procedures. The Structural Heart team treats almost 200 patients with Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) per year, since the program began in 2018 as the first in Suffolk County.
