Peripheral Arterial Disease
At Stony Brook Heart Institute, our expert team specializes in advanced, minimally invasive techniques to diagnose and treat Peripheral Arterial Disease.
Peripheral Arterial Disease, or PAD, is a common circulatory issue that affects millions, yet often goes undetected. Our board-certified physicians take a collaborative approach, keeping you informed and working with your other doctors to provide personalized, quality care.
Conditions Treated
PAD is a blockage of an artery — most often in the legs — that limits blood flow. Early on, symptoms may not appear, but can become painful as the disease progresses. Our specialists diagnose and treat:
- Lower extremity disease: Most common PAD, impacts leg circulation.
- Upper extremity disease: Reduces blood flow to the arms.
- Renal artery disease: Affects arteries supplying the kidneys.
Our specialists will work with you to diagnose your PAD and tailor an appropriate treatment approach for your unique situation.
Peripheral Arterial Disease Services
We start treatment with lifestyle changes and medication, reserving minimally invasive options for advanced cases so you experience less pain and faster recovery. If surgery is needed, we collaborate with Stony Brook’s vascular surgeons to see that you receive the most appropriate care available.
Noninvasive Diagnostic Tests
- Segmental blood pressure evaluation
- Ultrasound
- CT angiography
- MR angiography
Minimally Invasive Treatments
- Atherectomy: Cuts, shaves or vaporizes artery plaque.
- Angioplasty: Inflates a small balloon to open blocked arteries.
- Stenting: Implants a metal coil to keep vessels open.
