Cardio-Oncology
When facing a cancer diagnosis, protecting your heart health is a crucial part of your journey.
At Stony Brook Heart Institute, our cardio-oncology team brings together cardiologists and oncologists to provide comprehensive care that safeguards your heart before, during and after cancer treatment. We focus on ensuring your treatment is as safe and effective as possible.
Our collaborative approach allows us to detect risk factors early, monitor your heart's response to therapy and intervene quickly to prevent or reverse potential cardiac issues. We are dedicated to delivering integrated, expert care so you can focus on healing.
Conditions Treated
Certain cancer treatments can impact your heart, especially if you have pre-existing conditions. Our team is here to manage and mitigate these risks. You may be referred to our program if you have:
- A pre-existing heart condition, such as heart failure, a previous heart attack, blood clots or stroke.
- Risk factors for heart disease, including high blood pressure, diabetes, a history of smoking or obesity.
- A specific cancer type or treatment plan that affects the chest, such as chemotherapy or radiation that carries a higher risk of cardiac complications.

- Monitor heart health: We closely observe patients during and after cancer therapy to spot early signs of potential damage to the heart muscle or circulatory system.
- Provide timely intervention: Our team makes swift interventions to help prevent or reverse cardiac dysfunction, ensuring your cancer treatment can continue safely.
